Long-term Absence Management

Early detection is key to effectively managing complex cases. Aided by improved monitoring as a result of our approach, which is to identify early and manage all cases in a consistent manner. To achieve this we introduce long-term absence management triggers, we agree set triggers such as 3 weeks continuous absence could be identified as a trigger. 

The Service Delivery Manager will make regular updates to line managers and/or HR until a case has been resolved or has been escalated again to the ill health retirement process.


Other triggers could include:
  • Ambiguity over medications/conditions  and fitness to drive
  • Face to face assessment where a physical examination is indicated.
  • Doubt over diagnosis or investigation/diagnosis pending
  • Certain active mental health conditions
  • Where specifically requested by a line manager
  • Instances where individual is known to suffer illness of addiction.
Our Complex Case Procedure

Complex cases are normally managed by Service Delivery Manager who will provide regular updates to line managers and HR partners. This means that all stakeholders will have a single point of reference if they wish to raise any questions or concerns throughout the process.

Complex cases may be indentified in the following ways:

  • Triage of a standard sickness absence referral
  • Escalation following sickness absence referral assessment
  • Trigger identified by management information
  • Direct escalation by line manager or HR
